Here at Bridge Street Dental Centre, we offer Sedation Dentistry.
Many people feel anxiety when going to a dental office. Here at Bridge Street Dental Centre, we offer Sedation Dentistry. The last thing we want is for stress over dental treatments to stop you from taking appropriate care of your teeth and maintaining a high level of oral health.
Because we have a registered nurse, we can administer intravenous sedation. You won’t even remember the procedure being done. Other choices available include nitrous oxide and an anti-anxiety medication that you can take orally, before your appointment. Please call us if you would like to discuss any of these options.
In addition, there are some non-medical calming techniques you can try, to reduce your anxiety.
Ask questions. We always take the time to explain what a procedure involves, but if there is something you missed, or don’t understand, please ask. Knowing what is coming can help you understand the process and will reduce the “fear of the unknown.”
Avoid caffeine before your visit. Stay away from coffee, tea, soda or energy drinks. Caffeine can get your heart rate up and puts some people on edge.
Some folks swear by the calming effect of herbal teas. If you have a favourite, by all means, indulge.
Try a breathing exercise. This is a technique best practiced a few times at home first. Take a long, slow breath in through the nose, drawing air into the lower part of your lungs by lowering your diaphragm. You will see your stomach move out instead of your chest expanding. Then breath out through your mouth. A half a dozen or more breathes like this should slow your heart rate, and provide a calming effect. Once you are familiar with this method of breathing, you can try it while waiting for your procedure to begin.
Keep a clear picture in your mind of the benefits that good dental care will provide. Fewer cavities, a nice smile and improved general health. A little discomfort is easier to deal with when the rewards can be clearly visualized in our minds.
